What is the Sacrament of Confirmation?

Alongside Baptism and the Holy Eucharist, Confirmation is one of the three “sacraments of Christian initiation” (CCC 1285).

This sacred sacrament deepens the Church’s unity and endows her with a unique strength through the Holy Spirit. Those who receive Confirmation are thereby called to boldly live out and proclaim their faith—both in word and in action—as authentic witnesses of Christ.

The roots of this sacrament can be traced back to the early Church, as described in the Acts of the Apostles:
“When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. Upon arrival, they prayed that the people might receive the Holy Spirit, for He had not yet come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit” (Acts 8:14–17).
